No time to whip up a treat from scratch? Our top boxed cake mix comes together quickly and tastes homemade.
When you bake professionally, as I did for several years, people expect the treats you serve to be homemade. Not that I'm complaining! I genuinely love baking, so my cakes are always made from scratch — but I have fond memories of whipping up goodies using boxed mixes as a kid. They're practical for adults, too; not everyone has the time to measure out and sift dry ingredients, cream butter and sugar together and so on. Last year, I conducted a boxed yellow cake mix taste test, so of course, I had to seek out the best boxed chocolate cake mix to balance things out. And what better time to do so than during baking season?
Packaged cake mixes are nothing new: John D. Duff of P. Duff & Sons is credited with introducing the first cake mix (gingerbread!) in 1929, upon discovering he could dehydrate the company's molasses. These days, mixes typically consist of ingredients like flour, sugar and leavening agents, which are combined with liquids (usually water, eggs and oil) provided by the home baker. There's a boxed mix for just about every kind of cake imaginable lining supermarket shelves — but they can't all be equally as tasty, right?
That's what I set out to determine. I purchased, made and tasted 13 boxed chocolate cake mixes, including multiple variations from popular brands like Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines and Pillsbury (that said, I hid the boxes so I didn't know which mix was which). I actually couldn't believe how many types of boxed chocolate cake mixes exist — devil's food, milk chocolate, dark chocolate and everything in between. (Note: I didn't include gluten-free mixes in this round, but plan on doing so in future testing.) Alright — let's dig in.
